Overview

At the 2023 AAACN Annual Conference, the AAACN Staff Patient Education Special Interest Group asked participants to share their main concerns and interests. 75% responded that their top three concerns are: medical assistants' (MA) scope of practice, clinical staff orientation and competency assessment, and patient education adherence. Scope of practice for clinical staff varies and is determined by each state’s regulations, standards, and/or licensing boards. Assessing clinical staff educational needs and validating competencies are challenging. Clinical levels often range from MA, LPN/LVN, to RN. It is optimal to have each person function at the highest level of their scope of practice. Patient non-compliance and gaps in treatment plan adherence become a barrier to the patient’s health outcomes. This program provides a forum for discussion and sharing best practices related to these educational priorities.
