Sheila Phillips is a RN Care Manager within the Veterans Administration at the Joint Ambulatory Care Center in Pensacola, FL. She was selected for the 2012 VA Gulf Coast Healthcare System's Evidence-Based Practice Scholar. The VA began implementing the Patient-Centered Medical Home Model in primary care approximately two years ago. One of the tools the VA implemented to improve veteran self management skills and knowledge is Shared Medical Appointments (SMA). SMAs integrate Motivational Interviewing (MI), which is consistent with a veteran-centered approach and with the evidence that supports peer learning. Ms. Phillips plans to complete her graduate degree in the Clinical Nurse Leader Role so she can better serve veterans by improving health promotion and disease prevention at the microsystems level.
