Nurses' Knowledge of Diabetes: Translating Research Findings into Educational Planning

This session focuses on assessing the perceived and actual knowledge of diabetes mellitus of the staff nurse. Recognized as a national epidemic, diabetes mellitus presents significant implications for patient care, nursing practice, and nursing education. The presenters share results of a descriptive study that can be used to plan and implement strategies to promote nursing team education.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the study process including methods, data analysis, results and implications for nursing practice.
  • Illustrate the role of the staff nurse and other disciplines working collaboratively with the diabetes nurse educator in caring for patients with diabetes to improve health outcomes.
  • Outline a facility education plan for nurses working with patients with diabetes.
